The key belonged to a private storage vault downtown.
Daniel, Claire, and an attorney went there the next morning.
Victoria remained at the house under instructions not to contact anyone involved.
Daniel inserted the key into Box 317.
Inside was a single black case.
Claire opened it.
A flash drive.
Several photographs.
And a handwritten letter.
Daniel recognized his father’s handwriting immediately.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then something happened before I could tell you myself.
Daniel stopped.
Claire touched his shoulder.
“Keep going.”
Robert wrote that he had discovered a secret financial arrangement involving several Morgan company executives.
Millions of dollars had been redirected into offshore accounts.
But the people involved were not strangers.
One was Victoria’s father, Senator Charles Hayes.
Another was Robert’s longtime business partner.
Daniel’s hands shook.
Then came the line that changed everything.
Victoria knows more than she realizes. Do not blame her until you know who pressured her.
Daniel frowned.
He looked toward Claire.
“What does that mean?”
They opened the flash drive.
A video appeared.
Robert sat inside his office.
He looked tired.
“If this reaches Daniel, I need him to understand something.”
Robert explained that Senator Hayes had been using Victoria as an intermediary without telling her the full truth.
Documents were placed in her name.
Accounts were created using her identity.
When Robert confronted Hayes, the senator threatened to destroy the Morgan company and implicate Victoria.
Robert planned to expose everything.
Then he died.
Daniel watched the screen in silence.
His father’s final statement did not directly accuse anyone of causing his death.
But it proved Robert believed he was in danger.
Claire whispered:
“Victoria may have been scared.”
Daniel nodded.
“But she still knew enough to hide this.”
Another file appeared.
A voice recording.
Senator Hayes spoke.
If Daniel ever asks, you tell him Robert died naturally. You understand?
Then Victoria’s younger voice:
What did you do?
Hayes answered:
Something necessary.
Daniel stopped the audio.
Nobody spoke.
Claire looked at him.
“What are you going to do?”
Daniel stared at the black case.
For years, he believed his father’s death was tragic but ordinary.
Now he understood his wife had carried part of the secret into their marriage.
But there was another problem.
Victoria had been willing to pressure Lily into lying to protect that secret.
Daniel looked toward the attorney.
“Everything goes to investigators.”
Then he called Victoria.
She answered immediately.
“Daniel?”
“I found the box.”
Silence.
Her breathing changed.
“What was inside?”
Daniel looked toward his father’s letter.
“The reason you tried to make Lily lie.”
Victoria began crying.
And for the first time, she finally stopped denying everything.
